First of all, the interface has been spiffed up, based on the wonderful Bootstrap library. There have been visual changes on more or less all pages in the plugin.

Not only has a few bugs been fixed (hopefully), there is also new functionality.

AJAX Keywords Table

The keywords page has been revised and the page now features an AJAX powered table of keywords. The table is searchable (only the search term and landing page fields), can sort on the different columns and also has pagination built in.

This new table makes it a lot easier to research your SEO traffic, discover new niches or pinpoint weak areas in your site.

I had this feature planned for a while, but until recently I had difficulty finding just the right system to use. After a lot of research I found Datatables.net (datatables.net) which powers the table.

New features and bugfixes!

• Speed improvements: Removing unused code, revising functions, splitting code in to separate files and loading only when needed. The plugin now operates faster.
• Fix in the detection of 404 errors. The code measured incorrectly, making it seem like there was a lot more visitors than in reality.
• Added optional debug logging for helping pinpoting errors and different configurations. Turn on and off in settings. Warning: A lot of logging will happen and your log will look very confusing. Use only if you are trying to debug or very curious

• 140 supported search engines.

New Search Engines are added to the list when discovered, and the plugin currently supports 140 search engines.

• More translatable strings added. There are still a few places in the code I need to internationalize, but the plugin is 99% translated.The first languages are included and if you wish to help translate to your language, please contact me or go to the translation site.

New site design

As you might have noticed, I have also changed the theme on cleverplugins.com. The new theme is far from finished, but is already a huge improvement over the old design. The gradual tweaking is in anticipation of the upcoming 2.0 release and there is more help on the way.

The theme is based on Bootstrap which is a great platform to create websites fast and easy that look great.

Welcome Panel

After plugin installation you are greeted on the plugin dashboard page with a welcome panel. This panel includes first step instructions, link to the plugin pages as well as external links to the support forum, changelog etc.

I am sure this will be a great help for new users. It has a small “Dismiss” button that hides the welcome panel once you get bored with it. The new addition of the welcome panel is due to an article from Igor that I discovered, WordPress Welcome Panel in your theme or plugin. Thank you Igor

Template function

A feature suggested by Nat on the support forum was to reintroduce the template functions from the old v.1-series.

You can use seobooster_kwlist() to insert a list of incoming keywords to the page the visitor is currently viewing (if any).

Inserting the code is easy, basic usage is like this:

if (function_exists('seobooster_kwlist')) {
seobooster_kwlist();
}

Always wrap custom functions with a “function_exists()” check. It is best practice for a ton of reasons.

Multilingual

SEO Booster is now multilingual, and in this version comes with Danish language file.

The translation project will be handled here on cleverplugins.com, I will be announcing details about the translation and how to participate later.

Assign taxonomy to all Custom Post Types

WordPress have Custom Post Types, which you can use to filter and segment your content. Many plugins add their own custom post types to handle their content.

If you turn on the dynamic tagging feature in SEO Booster, you need to assign the taxonomy to all the post types otherwise the tags would not “stick”.

With this release it has become very easy. Turn on the “Assign Custom Post Types” feature in the settings, and all the custom post types you can see will have the taxonomy.

More Search Engines

No update of SEO Booster would be complete without some more search engines added to the detection routine. This release has 11 new search engines added, pushing the list of supported search engines close to the 100 mark!

The Dashboard Widget got trimmed a bit, and now looks a lot better.

There are several changes in this new version, here are the highlights:

Improved Widgets

This version has improved widgets allowing for more flexibility.

First of all, both widgets now have caching functionality built in. This means each widget is cached for 5 minutes. This is done to reduce processing time to find and output the links or keywords.

The Dynamic Links now has a few more options. The Dynamic Links widget shows links to other pages, using keywords that has been used by visitors to find them.

• Title: Title of the widget.
• Limit: How many links to show.
• What to show: Choose between either linking high performing (lots of traffic) keywords, or to show links to pages that have received little traffic. This can help boost traffic to those pages by introducing keyword anchor links to them.
• Show number of visits: This can be used to show number of visits next to each keyword.

“Pages People Forgot”

You can use this feature to increase traffic to low performing search terms.

Since you can use as many instances of the widget as you like, you can do any combination you wish.

Note: To speed up the widgets, they are individually cached for 5 minutes. This means that every time you make changes, it could take a little while before the widgets update on the webpage.

Backlink RSS Feed

A new feature is the backlink RSS feed. Subscribe to this feed to see the latest verified backlinks to your site.

You cannot access this feed without the correct key. This is added for security, otherwise anyone could follow your RSS feed of backlinks. Without the correct key, you are redirected to the frontpage.

The key is generated automatically, go to the dashboard and scroll down.

Note: Do not worry about spying eyes. A unique key is generated for the feed. Without it, there is no access to this feed.

Remove old keywords

This is a very requested feature.

Old and decaying keywords are search terms that have not been used by visitors for over 30 days.

The widgets automatically filter out keywords that have seen no traffic in the past 30 days, but in this version you can also manually remove them as well.

Want SEO Booster in your own language? I have begun making changes in the code to allow for translations of the interface. In the future the plugin will be available in several languages.

SEO Booster was originally created back in 2008, and recoding the plugin takes a lot of time, also to introduce many of the cool new features that is planned.

This version fixes bugs, and introduces new features as well as some old one from the v.1 series.

First the fixes.

Jens Tonnier sent in a couple of fixes, first one fixes a problem with importing the old v.1 table structure to the new 2.0 table structure.

Jens also sent in a fix for the tables, which could respond slowly when they grew large with a lot of keywords and backlinks.

I also fixed a bug in the function that verifies backlinks.

Now, the new features introduced in version 1.9.9.4:

Turn 404 monitoring on and off

Some people do not care about the 404 monitoring, so I introduced a setting to turn that feature on and off.

The daily maintenance script now reports how many changes that was made to the database. The maintenance routines scans for old visits from search engines not previously detected, it also rescans the back-links for irrelevant back-links that should be filtered out. The routines also cleans old log entries, keeping only the latest log entries.

Dynamic Tagging

A feature very popular in the v.1-series was the dynamic tagging of posts. This feature grabbed new search terms from search engines, and then created a tag with that term (if it does not already exists) and then tags the post with the tag.

Cross-tagging

Optional feature, the automatic cross-tagging looks for related posts and cross-tags them with the same tag if turned on. This feature can cross-link your content with the incoming keywords and search terms from the search engines.

Note: V.1 only supported tagging by visits from Google, version 2 tags posts with search terms from all supported search engines (currently 59).
